HDPE geomembrane technical specifications

The full tested property set for smooth HDPE geomembrane across all six thicknesses, with the ASTM test method and testing frequency for each property.

The table below is the manufacturer's data sheet for double side smooth HDPE geomembrane, in metric units. It is the document a CQA consultant will ask for before accepting material onto site, and the reference against which conformance samples are assessed.

Read it alongside the seam strength requirements at the bottom. Those three rows are the ones that determine whether the welds your crew produces will be accepted, and they are what a field tensiometer is measuring against.

Notes to the table:

  1. Machine direction and transverse direction average values are based on five specimens in each direction.
  2. The yield stress used to calculate the applied load for the SP-NCTL test is the mean value from MQC testing.
  3. Carbon black dispersion is assessed over ten different views: nine in Categories 1 and 2, with one allowed in Category 3.
  4. Oven ageing test conditions are a 20 hour UV cycle at 75°C followed by 4 hours of condensation at 60°C.
  5. UV resistance is expressed as percent retained value regardless of the original HP-OIT value.

Values are provided for information and are subject to change. A mill certificate accompanies each consignment against the rolls supplied.

Reading the specification

Four groups of properties, each answering a different question about the material.

Thickness and density confirm you have been sent what you ordered. Thickness is checked on every roll, and density confirms the resin is genuinely high density polyethylene at a minimum average of 0.940 g/cc.

Mechanical properties describe how the sheet behaves under load: tensile strength at yield and break, elongation, tear resistance and puncture resistance. These scale with thickness, which is why a 2.00 mm sheet resists puncture at 640 N against 320 N for 1.00 mm.

Durability properties predict service life: stress crack resistance, carbon black content and dispersion, oxidative induction time, oven ageing and UV resistance. Notice that these do not change with thickness, because they are properties of the formulation rather than the section.

Seam properties set the acceptance criteria for the welding your crew will do, tested to ASTM D6392.

Seam strength requirements by gauge

Required seam strength values, tested to ASTM D6392
ThicknessShear strengthPeel, hot wedgePeel, extrusion fillet
0.75 mm10 kN/m7.8 kN/m6.8 kN/m
1.00 mm14 kN/m10.5 kN/m9 kN/m
1.50 mm21 kN/m15.9 kN/m13.6 kN/m
2.00 mm28 kN/m21.2 kN/m18.2 kN/m
2.50 mm35 kN/m26.4 kN/m22.8 kN/m
3.00 mm42 kN/m31.7 kN/m27.2 kN/m

Extrusion fillet peel values are lower than hot wedge values for every gauge. This is expected and is a consequence of joint geometry, not a sign that extrusion welding is inferior. It is one reason specifications treat the two processes separately.

Frequently asked questions

What does GRI GM13 cover?

GRI GM13 is the specification published by the Geosynthetic Institute for smooth and textured HDPE geomembranes. It sets minimum property values and the testing methods and frequencies used to demonstrate them, covering thickness, density, tensile properties, tear and puncture resistance, stress crack resistance, carbon black content and dispersion, oxidative induction time and oven ageing. Most project specifications either reference GM13 directly or reproduce its table. The property set below follows that framework.

What is oxidative induction time and why does it matter?

Oxidative induction time measures how much antioxidant protection is present in the polymer. Polyethylene itself is stable, but heat, ultraviolet light and oxygen slowly degrade it, and the antioxidant package is what holds that off. OIT is therefore a proxy for how long the liner will last. Two tests are used: standard OIT to ASTM D3895 and high pressure OIT to ASTM D5885. The oven ageing and UV resistance rows show how much of that protection remains after accelerated exposure, which is the number that actually predicts service life.

What is stress crack resistance?

Environmental stress crack resistance measures the material's ability to resist cracking under sustained load in the presence of a surface active agent. It is tested by the notched constant tensile load method to ASTM D5397, with the requirement set at 500 hours minimum. It matters because geomembrane failures in service are far more often slow stress cracks at points of sustained strain, such as over a sharp subgrade feature or at a poorly supported penetration, than they are sudden tensile failures.

What seam strength does the liner have to achieve?

The last three rows of the table give the values. Seam shear strength and peel strength are tested to ASTM D6392, with separate peel values for hot wedge seams and extrusion fillet seams, because the two processes produce different joint geometry. A 1.50 mm liner, for example, requires 21 kN/m in shear, 15.9 kN/m peel on a hot wedge seam and 13.6 kN/m peel on an extrusion fillet. These are the numbers your field tensiometer is checking against.

Why is the lowest individual thickness value lower than the nominal?

Manufacturing tolerance. The specification sets both a minimum average value, which is the nominal thickness, and a lowest individual value, which is ten percent below it. A 1.00 mm sheet must average 1.00 mm with no single reading below 0.90 mm. This is normal and expected in extruded sheet. It becomes relevant on textured material, where core thickness is measured differently and comparing a textured sheet's nominal thickness against a smooth sheet's can mislead.
